These witty stories of an aging president of a small country – always buried in work but still managing to remain responsive and kind – were written by an Estonian author. Does that mean they talk about the Estonian president? Yes, but they might as well be about the Latvian president.

These witty stories of an aging president of a small country – always buried in work but still managing to remain responsive and kind while still having some human weaknesses – were written by an Estonian author. Does that mean they talk about the Estonian president? Yes, but they might as well be about the Latvian president. And Latvian children have to know something of the duties and life of their president, too!

Before Pontus was elected a president, he had already lived a long life. He was never short of responsibilities, but was always short of time. As a president he is often criticised even though he can hardly ever do what he actually wants to. Still, sometimes he succeeds, and the country is not worse off for it.

Aino Pervik (1932) is one of the most prolific and popular Estonian children’s authors. She has received numerous awards for her work, which has been translated to other languages, filmed and made into plays. Two of her books are already available in Latvian: “Gaisa baloniņš” (1972) and “Arabella, jūras laupītāja meita” (1994). “The President” ("Presidendilood"), which came out in Estonia in 2008, was written in a collaboration between a mother and a daughter. The illustrator of this book Piret Raud (1971) – the daughter of Aino Pervik and the legendary Estonian children’s author Eno Raud – is a beloved children’s book author in her own right. In this Aino Pervik’s book, the illustrations of Piret Raud are an indelible part of the message. They were adapted for the Latvian edition by Ūna Laukmane.
