This is the first publication of the play in verse by the Latvian classical writer Vizma Belševica; the book features a magnificent visual interpretation by Reinis Pētersons.

Vizma Belševica wrote A True Story of Čingo Baba, Big Snail and the Sorrow of the Ruler of the Sea in the 1980s, around the time when her other children’s plays, The Abduction of Sophie and Paper Horse, were created. A radio theatre production was mounted; the manuscript was held in the poet’s archive and yet was not published until now.

The cry-baby Čingo Baba gets into some real trouble. Now he is actually forced to cry: his salty tears are needed as gargle for a sea monster. The boy categorically refuses to do that: Fishfish, the terrifying prince of the sea, has injured his throat while swallowing fishing boats. The cry-baby finds inside him a courageous soul.
