This collection comprises all stories of the little bear and the little tiger, the most famous among Janosch’s characters. It was compiled to mark the 25th anniversary of the first book of the series.

The adventures of the bear and the tiger started more than twenty-five years ago when Beltz & Gelberg Publishing published a story under the title ‘Oh how Beautiful Panama Is’ (‘Oh, wie schön ist Panama’) that immediately won the German Youth Literature Prize. The little bear and little tiger are very good friends who live in a small house by the river and often get involved in various adventures. The two of them are not scared of anything, feeling very strong together. However, it is precisely the strength of their friendship that is tested by many of the events depicted in the book.

Janosch’s characters have become a stable part of the German children’s culture, leaving the boundaries of book covers, starring in animation films and games and gracing the shelves of toy shops. Some of them have reached Latvia in this incarnation, for instance, the toy with the somewhat weird name of ‘tigerduck’ (Tigerente); however, the original literary and visual context was lacking until now.

Janosch (real name Horst Eckert, 1931) is one of the best-known German illustrators and children’s authors; he has also written for grown-up readers. As a young man, he worked at a textile factory and went on to study at the Munich Academy of Art from which he did not graduate. Janosch, a free-lance artist throughout his career, has been using his pen name since 1960 when his first book was published. His numerous works (over a hundred books) have been translated into 30 languages.
